How To Integrate Drivers For Windows XP/Server 2003/Media Center 2005

Due to popular demand, I've decided to post this article on how to 'slipstream' drivers.

First things first, have your XP or Windows Server 2003 discs handy.

Second, download the following pieces of software:

nLite Totally free application that does all the magic.
Drivers that need to be integrated You can find these at your manufacturer’s website.

Once you have downloaded the drivers, you will need to extract them and put them in a location on your hard drive.

Now, install the software you just downloaded and startup nLite.

Click Next

Put your Windows install disc in the drive and point nLite to where it is located. It will ask where to copy the files to if it is on a CD/DVD and automatically detect what version of windows you are trying to slipstream. Click Next.

The next screen asks what you want to accomplish. For the intents and purposes of this tutorial, we're just going to click on 'Drivers' and 'Bootable ISO'. Click Next.

This screen is going to ask you for the drivers that you want to integrate. Please remember that you should only include drivers that are for your OS, otherwise, it may not install correctly. Click on the Insert button and select multiple because I have extracted all my drivers to a single common directory. After it processes all your drivers, you will see a list of them in the window:

Click Next

When it asks you to start the process, go ahead and say Yes.

This will take a few minutes to do, but when it is done, click Next.

Set everything up the way I have it displayed, click Burn, and when it's done you will have a bootable XP disc!

Ok. I'm trying to do this with a Gateway MT6821. This laptop came installed with Vista, and has a SATA hard drive. I've been doing a lot of google research, and it seems there are plenty of others out there who are having this problem:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml

Windows XP does not come with drivers for SATA hard drives. So, I need to create a slipstreamed XP install disc with the SATA drivers. I was able to find a copy of an exe installer for the SATA drivers, but I can't use this to make a slipstreamed disc.

Is there a way to extract the drivers from the install .exe without actually installing it? Or, once I have installed it, where do the drivers go? Can I locate them on the CD drive and copy them to my drivers directory for nLite?

Thanks.

P.S. With all my google-ing, I can't remember where I found this SATA exe installer, but I've posted it at http://ottomata.com/download/iata60_enu.exe

Ah! Fantastic. I was finally able to extract the SATA drivers from the exe. I didn't realize that they were automatically being extracted to a folder on the C drive called "drivers".

Once I had the drivers, it was only a matter of creating the slipstreamed disc, following your fantastic instructions.

Thanks for all your help Wayne!

Ok, this looks good and I hope to try it. However, how do you know which drivers you want nLite to pull over?

I bought a Gateway MT6840 preloaded with Vista Home Premium, and I also am getting the "hard Drive not found" error, when attempting to install from my OEM Windows XP PRO cd. Gateway says that Intel is the manufacturer of the motherboard in my laptop, which has a SATA Hard Drive (onboard). Do I need to get drivers for the motherboard or my hard drive for XP PRO, and do I check the Intel website for them? Not sure which drivers I actually need.

I always end up in the blue screen. I downloaded SATA driver to floppy disc and used external floppy drive to boot up during installation. But no use. Can some one please guide me how to downgrade to XP...???

"Drivers that need to be integrated You can find these at your manufacturer’s website"

As mention above. The "manunfacturer's website" is point to notebooks manufacturer' website, motherboard chipset website or others?

thanks to advice.

Hi

I bought Gateway GE5410 new computer with 400GB SATA HDD with Vista pre installed, I want to install Windows server 2003 on it, It did not recognize SATA hard drive, so I opened the BIOS and change the drives to IDE and tray to install windows 2003 it did work fine. Now the question is how I can upgrade server 2003 to read SATA HDD next time when I change BIOS back to SATA. Any Help.

Thanks in advance

Thanks!! I did this in my new IBM thinkpad T61 and it worked fine. My WinXP bootable Cd can directly identify my SATA drive and I dont need to mess with floppy drives.

How do I use this when I am not able to install Win 2003 server. I guess this requires already an installed Windows OS, right?
When I am installing, it does not even want to proceed with the install and asks for the Floppy. By the way the floppy didi not work either.
I am stuck. Can somebody help?
