Downgrade From Vista To XP

Finally! After months of wrangling with my wife, I got her a new laptop. Her old one was slow, inept, and the power supplies we would buy off of eBay would melt after a few months of use. What provoked the sudden purchase? Finding a computer that was able to be downgraded to Windows XP.

It's true. Any new computer you buy this day has Windows Vista onboard, which to anyone who has taken the time to use it, is a real headache. Vista is a resource hog, not friendly with many existing applications, and is worse than a nagging wife (not mine of course) about every operation you perform on it.

After some research, I found that I could buy a HP dv9207us laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium at a pretty decent price (It also helped that I was able to unload my old laptop on someone else for $300). It included a ton of extras including a TV Tuner card, HDMI support and what my wife calls a 'cute remote' that is the size of a credit card. One problem though, if you try to get any XP drivers for it, none are available.

However, this never stopped me from getting them. I figured that since this was a 'close out' model, that there would have to be some laptops in the same product family that originally had XP on them. Gold mine! Since the hardware was virtually the same, finding drivers was a snap.

I dropped a Windows XP Media Center 2005 disc in the drive, only to find out that it needed some SATA drivers for the hard disk, but less than a half hour later I built myself a slip-streamed DVD with everything on it. Everything else went without a hitch, and BANG!, I got myself a brand new laptop WITHOUT Vista. Now, I did make the backup discs, so that when Vista matures a bit more, I can just drop my restore disc in and enjoy Vista in the future.

Oh, and by the way, this isn't an April Fool's joke.

Exactly what I did today!

I bought a new HP dv2000 laptop with XP Media Center preloaded; I ordered the Vista Home Premium upgrade pack from HP; I installed it rather successfully but when I realized that some features very useful to me which were present in XP MCE, like Remote Desktop and Offline Files/Folders, were not included in the Vista Home Premium edition !!

And I definitely don't want to pay €200 more to upgrade to Vista Ultimate just to get those features back ! So I restored my XP system from the disk image I did just before upgrading ...

By the way, native SATA support can be disabled in the BIOS setup on most HP laptops. This can make things easier when backuping/restoring disk images.

Do you think you could post a disk image of the DVD you made to install the drivers? I'm trying to downgrade to XP as well. When I boot from the CD, setup complains that it can't find any hard drives.

Thanks!

I purchased a HP Pavilion tx1000 w/4G of RAM, and Vista Ultimate. Is there anyone who can help me get rid of Vista and get XP? HP Tech Support has just informed me that (1) I can purchase XP if I want to from any store and (2) my PC will not work because XP will not have any drivers for my PC. Is this true?

"HP Tech Support has just informed me that (1) I can purchase XP if I want to from any store and (2) my PC will not work because XP will not have any drivers for my PC. Is this true?"

The notion of no drivers is *completely* false! Why would they tell you such a terrible lie? Because they're in the business of selling Vista. One of the tricks that I pulled in order to get the drivers for my laptop was to look at the drivers page for my model in the Vista section. This let me know all the drivers that I needed to find for my hardware. I can't tell you exactly what you need because I don't know the exact model that you have (there are quite a few tx1000 models), but here are some links for the drivers for the hardware that you likely have:

chipset
TV Tuner
touchpad
quicklaunch buttons
webcam

One thing that I would caution you to do is to make sure and create those restore discs. There is a utility on your computer that will assist you in doing that.

If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me.

i bought a new packard bell laptop with vista already installed. At first i thought it was good, but then i realised that i couldnt load ANY game what so ever without it crashing or the drivers not being compatible. I downgraded back to XP with help from a freind, but for some reason it has knocked my WLAN drivers out, is this normal?

i went on the packard bell website and tried to download the drivers..but for some reason it wont.

My advice is to not even consider getting Vista until manufacturers are up to date with their drivers..

wow..microsoft really disapointed themselves..

What you need to do is find some SATA drivers in order for windows to detect your hard drive. After you find the drivers, you can slipstream the drivers into your Windows XP installation disc ( following this tutorial http://blog.waynehartman.com/archive/2007/04/10/64.aspx ) , or if you have a floppy drive, put the drivers on it and press F6 during the appointed time during the Windows XP setup. Hope this helps.

I've recently purchased a new HP Pavilion p1700n and it was alright at first then I got this printer and a game. I couldnt install my printer and PC game (F.E.A.R.) on the computer because it wasnt xp. So after a few weeks of being annoyed I went on ahead and degraded it to XP. Now that I done that yesterday I cannot connect to the internet. Im doing research how to fix my problem and I've tried mostly everything (hooking it up straight to the modem, wireless cards, ect.) Are there any suggestions that could help me?

I recently purchased an HP dv9308nr laptop with Vista and had so much trouble, asked their tech people to downgrade to XP. Everything works fine EXCEPT it doesn't recognize the soundcard (built in on the motherboard). I'm told this is hard-to-impossible to fix because the hardware was built for Vista, not XP. Is that right? Can drivers be found to fix it?

you dont need the sata drivers... please note the bios comes with built in drivers for the sata hard drive; it has to, otherwise how could vista load in the first place; what no one tells you is the drivers only work with vista; thats why you cant install xp; however, when you insert the xp disc and boot from the cd xp does load sata drivers... so the question is why doesnt it work? the answer is simple, the bios is over-riding the xp drivers; simply disable sata driver support in the bios and xp will install; thanks

I have the same issue with hp tx1000, I made such a fuss that the Geeksquad worked on it for free but to no avail. So I went onto the site that I purchased the laptop from, looked up all of the specs and starting with the network controller I went diectly to the mfg sites and downloaded the drivers, it takes time but I only have the burner to work on. Another help was re-installing vista and writing down the device names (make sure you hit "show hidden files"). also make sure you set restore points when you get something working it saves the guessing when an update wipes out your hard work!

Same here ... I've got problems.

I recently built my own PC, and used Vista Ultimate x64. It is REALLY slow (when I press on my computer, it takes about 5 - 10 seconds to load).

I have had a lot of trouble getting the drivers since all of them are for xp, and i had to download them from manufacturer's websites (which didn't always work).

Does anyone have any idea of why my PC is so slow? I can't do anything on it right now.

I think its because of Vista. (I have even tried setting the memory timings manually)

Another thing that pisses me off is that I can't upgrade my BIOS (risky as it is), because Vista doesn't have a 16 bit DOS mode!

I really am ticked off at microsoft.

Chris,

If choosing to build with Vista were bad enough, the x64 edition was even worse. All device drivers for the x64 edition have to be digitally signed, so if the manufacturer doesn't do that, you're out of luck. One of the other reasons for the cause of your slowdown is the amount of RAM on your machine. I imagine that you likely have 1GB, but another GB could be in order. The other item you might consider is putting a RAID 0 stripe for your hard drives. Beceause Vista likes to load as much as possible into memory, it is going to do some heavy disk reading to get it there. By getting a raid drive stripe, you improve the I/O throughput at which Vista can read your drives.

Bottom line, though, I would encourage to shelve your copy of Vista for a better day and get a copy of XP. The development of Vista was rushed and I don't think it was a well thought out product. Someday Vista will be good to move to, but not for a couple of years yet.

Thanks,

Wayne Hartman

For those of you having problems getting the audio to work on your 9000us series HP laptop, I have posted links to these two drivers that I used to get the sound to work. Let me know if they work for you. As stated I have the 9207us laptop and these drivers worked perfectly. NOTE: you will need to download *both* of them.

No luck for me on my dv9207us with those drivers. UAA installs fine, but the driver does not work. It truly humbles me to be a student of computer networking and have no clue how to simply install an OS and get it running. I slipstreamed an entire XP disc and thought this was going to be soooo easy. Lol...

Unfortunately, I am back at my Vista install and will play with it for a while I guess.

Those of you with HP, read the comments. When you disable SATA in the BIOS, it'll work.

My first question is this: When downgrading to XP Pro, do you have to wipe the partition with Vista on it with the XP install? Or will it just overwrite the Vista OS files and you'll still have all your files?

Second question: To the guys with HP, when you downgraded, did HP's Quickplay feature work properly? Like, totally without a hitch just as it should have? Or do you have to reinstall that on its partition too?

Thanks in advance guys.

What I really need is NVIDIA 6150 chip set driver because this driver controls the network hardware so I can connect to the internet. Without it, the laptop is totally useless.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp35501-36000/sp35640.exe Verisoft Access Manager

Its important to note that you must perform a forced manual install of the video, chipset and TV tuner drivers. Within the device list, use the SMU driver for the coprocessor, net bus emulator for the PCI Bridge Device, SMBus driver for the SM Bus Controller, and the ethernet driver for unknown device. An additional unknown device will appear under sound, video and game controller, use the TV tuner driver.

I also loaded the Verisoft Access Manager software for use with the thumb reader, HP states that its for Vist only, however the readme file says otherwise. Works perfectly in XP.

The only aspect of this notebook that doesn't work is the touch screen. I downloaded Microsoft Experience Pack for Tablet PC, but it will only install on a machine running WinXP for Tablets. I figure there must be a registry hack that could fool the software, but since I'm from the wacky world of UNIX I'm clueless. If anybody knows the method, please respond.

If anyone has any question, feel free to ask.

What a relief.
I have read about the troubles others have had and I am grateful that you have helped them as well as me. After reformatting to XP and then starting the software installs - it all came to a stop when I could not get that graphics driver. I was ready to "restore" Vista. Candidly, I was one step short of desperate. So, thanks again for providing a solution.
The *only* thing left - and it is a small one - there is not HD Audio Input - the Webcam works - but no sound. I have a small webcam/mic so I can live without this.
However - the error message on bootup says "RtHDVCpl.exe - unable to locate component - application failed to start because PROPSYS.dll was not found."
Regardless of your hoped for solution,
Did I remember to say Thanks, Wayne?

Hi, I have a tz1000x and I contacted the HP costumer service, they told me the downgrade will affects some of the features like the touchscreen, could that be plausible? that the touchscreen only works for vista?
thank you

I discovered that if you run Vista on Safe mode you can set up the properties on the particular programs you wan to run to XP. The programs I have that did not run on Vista now do.

So in a similar fashion i have downgraded. I got the touchscreen to work with this driver:

http://www.eeti.com.tw/web20/drivers/Win2KXP/WIndows%20XP_V4.3.8.4207.zip

I found this on a translated page of a downgrade guide for the tx1000 series:

http://www.google.com/translate?u=http://darkgiank.110mb.com/?p%3D64&langpair=es

Now i still have a MAJOR problem that i simply cannot get my LAN to work...wireless is fine, but i get no response from the ethernet LAN. I cannot seem to find a driver for this.

I just purchased a ThinkPad T61 with Vista of course, and even though I threw 2 gigs of memory, plus 1 gig of "turbo" memory?? The thing crashes all the time.

I have a cheap compaq with Vista and it works perfect, but the 2000 dollar T61 freezes, takes forever to load, and forever to shut off.

I want my XP back! Can I do it, and how much headache am I looking at?

I like some of what Vista has to offer, and I like the UI, but I can really do without all the flashy junk that slows me down, and Office '07 is not my favorite either.

Per Victor Byzantine's post earlier regarding the WLAN drivers from HP, the particular driver in question (SoftPaq 36684) has actually been removed from their FTP file store for some unknown reason!

I found an identical copy of the file at:
http://s89934018.onlinehome.us/DRIVER/sp36684.exe
This should help out anyone in distress about their HP WLAN connections!

I have just purchaed a PC with Vista pre-installed. This PC has to be connected with multiple printers, multiple other pcs, and a MAC, BUTvista does not have drivers available for those printers and networking seems to be an issue. I decided to install XP over vista but unfortunately, I get an error as follows:
A Problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent samage to your computer
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps
Check for virused on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Chech you hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run Chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I restarted the PC, uninstalled the MCAfee, and tried doing everything possible but could not get the XP CD to run.
The system configuration is as follows:
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel(R) Core(TM)2CPU 4400@2.00GHz
2.00 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for the light (hope of xp)at the end of the tunnel (evil evil vista). I just purchased a hp pavillion dv6000 (or dv6500 according to my system information) and I want to downgrade asap. my system bios is hp f.23 10/3/2007, smbios version 2.4 My plan is to follow a check list compiled from your site: 1. make a system recovery disk of evil vista 2. extract as much information on drivers for this system as possible and (hopefully) find what I may need, then 3.try to boot from the xp disk. If you have any other tips for a smooth transfer or information not seen in the threads specific to my system I would be most grateful for you advice. Cheers-Suzanne

Hey there software-problem-solving people :)

I see we have rather similar problems regarding hp tx1000 tablet/notebook pc.
Well, I managed to enable touch screen with a fresh copy of winXP that had a second cd for enabling touch screen with it and it works. I got it on mininova as a utorrent file - Microsoft.Windows.XP.Tablet.PC.Edition.2005.Corporate.SP2.Integrated.February.2007-ETH0
and works as a charm. I also found the wireless drivers and the bluetooth drivers.
Now let me do some help work for you who are still searching for drivers. Here are the names of most of them. Some work and some dont, you have to figure it out, I lost my nerves trying to enable nvidia video, sound and cable network ... I really did :)
Here: 8.26_11.09_nForce_winxp for chipset (nForce_430_410_8.22_winxp2k_international is another option), 91.47_forceware_winxp2k_whql (NVIDIA_GeforceGo6150_GraphicDrv_sp33549 is another option), sp35445 for proc update (turion64 x2), bus drv for HDaudio sp32646, wireless and bluetooth integrated sp32883, than I have tried sp32883, 33258, 35314, 35384, ... oh my god that was tough. I still havent been able to enable onboard graphics with nvidia drv, and there is still no sound and no wired network. But ty to use pc wizard 2008 to help you identify your components, it helped me a bit. THIS IS A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK, HP tx1000

Wish you all the luck trying to find drv-s
And please post any comment regarding tx1000 that could come useful THX and greetings from Ljubljana

HP dv2225nr returned from repair center without verifying new MB would boot! Restore disks fail to function (new MB = new s/n!) so vista fails to boot and won't restore!

2+ weeks for virgin, factory restore disk to arrive so I load up XP.

All funtions well, EXCEPT, XP can't find Broadcom wireless hardware. SP34152.exe won't do it; I'm at a loss.

All else works flawlessly. XP with SP2 installed.

You may consider going directly to Broadcom for the driver.

Also, here's another link to a Broadcom driver from HP. Let us know if it works.

As it so happens I too have a HP dv9207us and want to go from Vista back to XP. I have a legal copy of XP for the product key.
